Case Study

Wester Spirit Co

Location: Glasgow

Wester Spirit was created at the end of 2016. Allan and Zander enjoyed rum and wondered why there wasn’t any being made in Scotland when there was so much choice in Scottish gins and whiskies.

The Rum and Craft Spirits markets are growing rapidly worldwide but consumers have only a very limited selection of Rums to choose from. Those available are often filled with sugar and colourings to give the impression of quality and quite often there isn’t much transparency about the source or age of the rum.

Wester’s first distillations took place at an already established distillery in Perth, but the founders knew they would need their own distillery for the company to reach its full potential. They approached DSL Business Finance Ltd for a loan of £45K to help Wester grow. This enabled the purchase of equipment to increase capacity for filling casks of rum and whisky and allowed them to hire staff. In November 2018 they launched Glasgow’s first rum distillery in over 300 years.

Wester’s products are now stocked in over 300 establishments and listed with 9 major wholesalers. Its spiced rum was named in the top 10 spiced rums in the world by The Independent and won best distilled product at the Scotland Food & Drink Awards 2019. Wester continues to grow capacity and sales with the addition of new equipment and talented people.

“The loan from DSL enabled us to exceed our targets.”
