Case Study

The Good Pet Collective Ltd

Location: Glasgow

The Good Pet Collective Ltd (“Good Pet”) is a private limited company established in July 2024 by founder and sole director Catriona Blue. Based in Glasgow’s thriving West End, the business was formed to acquire and continue the operations of the well-known independent pet shop Pets Cetera.

With nearly 30 years of trading history, Pets Cetera is a much-loved local store specialising in premium pet food and accessories, particularly for cats and dogs. Renowned for its customer service and trusted stock -featuring veterinary-grade brands such as Royal Canin- the business enjoys a loyal and well-established customer base.

Catriona brings a unique blend of skills to the venture, combining retail experience and a strong understanding of animal care from her time as a dog handler and farm assistant. Her vision is to build on the legacy of Pets Cetera while introducing community-focused initiatives such as monthly dog walks, pet nutrition events, and in the longer term, an in-store dog wash station and treat box subscription service.

Business Requirement

To acquire Pets Cetera – including its goodwill, fixtures, fittings, and stock- Catriona required external funding to supplement her own investment following the sale of personal assets. The funding would also support legal and lease costs and provide a working capital buffer during the early months of transition.

Initially, Catriona will continue working in her current job while overseeing business operations, supported by the shop’s two existing part-time staff. Her goal is to step into a full-time role in the business from year two, streamlining operations while maintaining the shop’s existing community presence.

Securing the Business Loan from DSL Business Finance

To bring her plans to life, Catriona secured a £50,000 loan from DSL Business Finance through the Investment Fund for Scotland (IFS). This was combined with her personal contribution, primarily funded through the sale of some of assets.

The funding package covered:

  • The acquisition of Pets Cetera
  • Legal fees and lease arrangements
  • Working capital and initial operational costs

With the support of McAllister Accountants and advice from Business Gateway Glasgow, Catriona is also implementing Xero accounting software to establish strong financial systems from day one.

Key Success Factors Behind the Loan Approval

  • Established Business Model: Pets Cetera has a longstanding track record of profitable trading and brand recognition in Glasgow’s West End.
  • Relevant Sector Experience: Catriona’s background in retail, animal handling, and customer service supports her ability to manage and grow the business.
  • Continuity of Service: Retaining the existing staff ensures customer relationships and business stability are preserved throughout the ownership transition.
  • Significant Personal Investment: Catriona’s contribution in the total project cost highlights her commitment and reduces lender risk.
  • Future-Focused Vision: Plans for additional services, community engagement, and online offerings present opportunities for organic growth.
